McDonalds Madagascar 2 Toys Australia and New Zealand

Madagascar Escape 2 Africa 2008 toys are the latest happy meal toy promotion at McDonalds in New Zealand and Australia. The toys which were released on Monday 22 December 2008 coincide with the new animated Madagascar 2 movie from the Dreamworks stable. McDonalds have made a smart move with this marketing campaign as the Madagascar 2 promotion is the largest global release since the Shrek 3 happy meal promotion last year. Unfortunately the McDonalds New Zealand release is a bit behind the rest of the world so we've had to wait quite a few extra weeks to get our hands on these toys.

The McDonalds Madagascar 2 toys are a nice set. Each happy meal toy is motion-activated and talks when moved or shaken once its button is switched to the on position. McDonalds could have gone for a plush set but I'm pleased they played it safe and went for hard plastic which in my opinion is more collectable, durable and a lot more fun! If you are interested in a plush set take a look at the Subway release of Madagascar, the toy tie-in for the first movie.

McDonalds Madagascar Escape 2 Africa 2008 toys

My Rating of the McDonalds Madagascar Escape to Africa Toys

Design and Concept = 3 out 5
These toys are nicely designed. Each toy is easily recognisable as a well loved character from the Madagascar 2 movie making them very appealing. And they certainly capture the fun flavour of the movie.

Quality and Durability = 3 out of 5
These toys are reasonably well made and finished. The battery will run out quickly though so they are not for long term especially as its easy to leave them turned on by mistake.

Playability = 2 out of 5
The toys are fun but have limited play value and would not hold a child's attention after their initial interest waivers. With a bit more thought I suspect McDonalds could have come up with an action for the toys as well.

Collectability = 4 out of 5
I've scored high in this category as I reckon these toys will remain popular with kids and collectors alike as the movie is a great sequel.

The 8 Madagascar Escape to Africa Toys 2 included in this promotion are:

Alex (Lion)(3 phrases)
“I’m Alex, the Alex”
“Let’s go wild”
“You got it.”

Marty (Zebra)(2 phrases)
“Hollah at ya boy”
“You guys are crazy”

Melman (Giraffe)(3 phrases)
“What are we gonna do?”
“Ow Ow Ow!”
“You guys really need a doctor.”

Gloria (Hippo)(3 phrases)
“Alrighty boys,”
“Let’s go”
“I know that’s right!”

Moto Moto (Hippo)(2 phrases)
“I know I’m every hippo’s dream”
“Wow.”

Skipper (Penguin)(2 phrases)
“Just smile and wave boys”
“Progress report!”

Julien (Lemur)(1 line from his trademark song)
"I like to move it, move it"

Mason (Chimp)(3 phrases)
“A ha”
“Check mate”
“Africa"

Summary
McDonalds have released 8 Madagascar Escape 2 Africa 2008 happy meal toys just in time for the Christmas holiday period in Australia and New Zealand. Each toy is motion activated and says at least one catch phrase from the movie when shaken. The set is made up the following toys: Marty, Gloria, Melman, Skipper, Mason, Alex, Moto Moto, and Julien.

KFC Kids Meals Spinjas Toys

KFC, New Zealand are currently giving away one Spinjas toy with every KFC kids meal. These toys are identical to those promoted in Australia and possibly the rest of the world although I would welcome confirmation from anyone who has the lowdown on these premiums.

In the last few years KFC, New Zealand has conisistently had similar toy promotions to Australia making it easy for collectors to trade across the Tasman. On the whole this is probably a good thing but it is the country specific sets that carry a premium on the collector market or secondary market if you want to call it that so as a collector I’d prefer them to have the odd set which is unique to New Zealand.

Back to the Spinjas toys. These toys are hard plastic and only suitable for children 3 years and above. Each one is a spinning top (probably no surprises there!). The toys included in this 4 piece set are:

Jumping Jax
Shadow Spinner
Chux
Roof-Sai

Essentially these Spinjas toys are good for the KFC collector who likes to pick up a set of each promotion but overall they have limited collectable value and interest.

Why oh why doesn’t KFC return to its glory days with sets like they brought out 10 years ago? I’m talking sets that are classic like Star Wars, Toy Story and the Looney Tunes to name a few. These were good action figure and character driven sets that I’m sure had collectors and fans eating more drumsticks and tenders than was good for them. And we loved the collector buckets too didn’t we? Honestly whoever is doing the marketing at KFC is behind the 8-ball on this one.

McDonalds in New Zealand and Australia have released four Transformers Animated happy meal toys for boys and four Littlest Pet Shop toys for girls in September 2008. These are the same Transformers Animated happy meal toys that were released in the US a few months ago except that once again we are getting a cut down version of the larger US promotional sets.

The McDonalds Transformers Animated set has only four out of the original six of the US release. Lugnut and Starscream having been dropped off.

McDonalds Star Wars The Clone Wars Toys

In August 2008 fast food giant, McDonalds released a very cool set of McDonalds Star Wars: The Clone Wars happy meal toys in Australia and New Zealand.

The Clone Wars set is made up of eight collectable toys featuring characters from the new Clone Wars movie. This set is a cut down version of the McDonalds Clone Wars US Set which has a complement of 18 toys. Surprisingly McDonalds didn’t release all the toys here in New Zealand as I’m sure many delighted Star Wars fans (young and old) would have flocked in their droves to consume mountains of happy meals just to secure the full set.

The diet conscious among us could also opt to purchase the toys separately for $2.50 a pop. Probably a good investment as I see these toys mint in pack are now selling for $5.00 a throw on auction sites like Trademe.

The toys released two at a time over four weeks are bobble headed, made of hard plastic and have their own individual sound effects. The characters from the movie released in New Zealand like their US counterparts are all depicted in their respective spaceships. The eight piece set includes:

  • Padme Amidala in Naboo Starcruiser

  • Darth Vader in TIE Fighter

  • Ahsoka Tano

  • Asajj Ventress in Droid Fighter with Light-Up Lightsaber

  • Anakin Skywalker in Jedi Starfighter

  • Captain Rex

  • Yoda (says "May the Force be with you!")

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi
